Build courses around your Club Features and islands, and share the exact course details directly with sailors on Trace, by the fleet or division they're in. Once racing is underway, every sailor on Trace is live tracked, with replays and a leaderboard that updates by leg or at any timing gates you've added.
In the spirit of keeping things simple for race officers, we've focused on letting you do as much setup as possible before race day. You can build out your Club Fixed Mark Courses, and even create an event or event series with fleets and divisions already set up and linked to the courses they sail. On race day, the race officer only has to decide which course to sail and activate it on Buoy Zone, and every fleet and division is notified of its course on Trace.
Feeling more spontaneous? A race officer can select "Fixed mark course" when creating a course, and build it on the fly by picking the club features to sail around.
Add all your club features first. It's important that every feature your club uses as part of a course is in Buoy Zone. Review your course sheets and check you've got them all, including islands, which you can add as polygons.
Fixed mark courses are organised in a hierarchy of Groups, Courses and Variants. The best way to use this at a club is to make Buoy Zone the source of truth for all your course details. You can then export from here to inform your sailing instructions and other downstream uses of course information, including course sheets and map views.
You need to be a club administrator to be able to create "Club Fixed Mark Courses".
Go to the Club Fixed Mark Courses page (Manage a course -> menu top right -> Select "Courses"
Key concepts
Course Groups - A collection of courses relevant to a seasonal series, regatta or specific event. In simple terms, a high-level way to file your courses.
Courses - An individual course with its mark roundings. Where there are different versions of the same course, use variants.
Variants - Different versions of a course, usually because different fleets or divisions sail a different version of it on the day.
When should you use a variant? A couple of scenarios
The club course for the day is course #1 and there are four divisions sailing. Divisions 1 and 2 are faster and sail a longer variant of course #1, while divisions 3 and 4 are slower and sail a shortened variant. Every fleet is sailing its own variant of course #1.
A yacht race with many divisions, each sailing its own version of the same course.
Good to know about variants
The variants of a course form the set of courses being sailed at the same time.
You can map variants of a course to a fleet or division per event. This is done in the event settings. This means on race day, the race officer selects the course for the day and all the fleets get assigned the right variant for them.
A race officer can start a course and select any pre-defined Club Fixed Mark Course or create a one-time course for the day. If the race is part of an event, the Race officer can:
Link to the event.
Pull in the fleets from the event
Choose a club course
Assign variants or different courses to each fleet. If the Event has variants pre mapped to fleets, the RO's job is to simply choose the course for the day and the fleets will be assiged the correct variant automatically.
